LIFELIKE Lore: The History, Stanzas 1-10

I'm in the process of writing the history of the Ethereal Eclectics corporate office building, and I decided that an epic fantasy-movie-opening-voiceover style would be the most appropriate. Here's a bit of a taste:

1.

At the dawn of the first age, in the fiscal year of our Lord sixteen, the world was stricken with a grey blight known as the Recession. Our domain, known by a since forgotten name at that time, was not spared from this blight.

(more after the break)

2.

The people fell to despair, and our numbers dwindled. The resources to support them were simply gone, sucked away by the merciless blight.

3.

Desperate, our young Lord searched for answers. Meanwhile, the blight continued, and those remaining began to lose hope, turning into husks of their former selves; drones who have forgotten all but their work.

4.

Contact with our Lord was lost, and the people resigned themselves to their fate. Most believed that our Lord had abandoned us, some that he had simply failed in his quest.

5.

The blight of the Recession continued. Despair turned to normalcy. The drones were all that remained, aside from a few strong souls. Even the strong, though, came to accept the new way of life. Some seemed to not even notice the change. The blight spares not even the strong.

6.

In the absence of our Lord, his five disciples, the Members of the Board, were entrusted to watch over our domain. Hospice nurses of a dying corporation.

7.

As rumors grew of the Lord’s abandonment--or equally likely demise--the people still lucid enough to notice looked to the Members of the Board for guidance. At first, the Board offered shallow reassurances. Soon after, they turned simply to silence.

8.

With resources dwindling and the Lord still missing after four long years, the people started to question the Lord’s appointment. How was he chosen? Where did he come from? Was it merit, privilege, or nepotism that earned him his place? Of course, it didn’t matter now.

9.

As unceremoniously as the blight began, so too did it end. Though some argue that the Recession never truly ended, it was clear that something new had begun. Something very new. The dawn of the Second Age.

10.

The exact starting point of the second age yet remains unknown, as its catalyst remained hidden for quite some time. As such, most attribute the second age of Ethereal Eclectics to a series of events collectively known as The Restructuring.
